Our Purpose Statement:
What Our Ministry Is Built On
There are a host of Scriptures that describe, as well as, define the church and her various ministries. However, there are two definitive statements made by Jesus that identify the five purposes that He assigned to His church.
The Great Commandment:
Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This
is the first and great commandment. “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two
commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40)
In the Great Commandment, Jesus identifies two assignments He has given His church:
- To love God with every fiber of our being and life;
- To love people with the same measure of love we afford ourselves.
The Great Commission:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the
age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
In the Great Commission, Jesus identifies three assignments He has given His church:
- To make converts into disciples;
- To enfold new converts into the fellowship of the local church through water baptism;
- To teach new converts the disciplines of the Word making them fully devoted followers of Jesus.
First Purpose:
Worship
The first purpose of the church, and the one with the highest priority, is to love God and to express that love to Him in times
of celebration and intimacy. Worship is not just an activity of the corporate service on Sunday; it is to become the very
lifestyle of every follower of Jesus Christ.
"Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker." (Psalm 95:6)
“You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.” (Matthew 4:10)
Second Purpose:
Relationship
The second purpose of the church is to baptize new converts and enfold them into the fellowship of the church. To teach
them that we are called to “belong,” not just to “believe.” Every believer needs to develop relationships with other believers
within the church that will hold them accountable and encourage them in their Christian walk.
"Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the
household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief
cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are
being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit." (Ephesians 2:19-22)
Third Purpose:
Discipleship
The third purpose of the church is to teach believers the principles and precepts of the Bible so that they can mature in
spiritual matters and be conformed into the image of Christ. Every believer needs to grow in their knowledge of God’s Word
and to conform their lives to God’s ways, thereby allowing the Holy Spirit to produce within them the nature and character
of Christ.
"Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in
Christ Jesus." (Colossians 1:28)
"Till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the
stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of
doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up
in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint
supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying
of itself in love." (Ephesians 4:13-16)
Fourth Purpose:
Ministry
The fourth purpose of the church is to serve God by serving others. God has given special gifts and abilities to each member
of His family to be used in a ministry to people in need. Every believer needs to discover, develop and invest their ministry
gift into the lives of people thereby, becoming a source of encouragement and compassion.
"Speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— from whom the whole body, joined
and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes
growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love." (Ephesians 4:15-16)
Fifth Purpose:
Mission
The fifth purpose of the church is to reach out to the whole world and win souls to Jesus Christ. First, we reach out to our
circle of influence by sharing our story of how Jesus saved us and what a positive difference He has made in our lives.
Second, we reach out to those who are nearby, but are outside our circle of influence with practical ways of expressing
Christ’s love. Third, we reach out to the nations of the world, telling them of the life-changing love of Jesus Christ and the
peace, hope and joy only He can give.
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” (John 20:21)
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem,
and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
Our Statement of Faith:
What We Believe
1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
3. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ; in His virgin birth; in His sinless life; in His miracles; in His vicarious
and atoning death through His shed blood; in His bodily resurrection; in His ascension to the right hand of the Father;
and in His personal return in power and glory.
4. We believe that for the salvation of the lost and sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.
5. We believe that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment; unites man to Jesus Christ in
faith; brings about the new birth; dwells within the regenerate and produces in them the Fruit of the Spirit which enables
them to grow in sanctification.
6. We believe that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is available to all who believe in Jesus Christ and is received by faith upon
request. It empowers the believer to live an overcoming and victorious life; bestows upon, and releases the Gifts of the
Holy Spirit for the edification of the Body of Christ and the evangelization of the world.
7. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost: the saved unto the resurrection of life; and the lost unto
the resurrection of damnation.
8. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ.
